Why it matters

Dripping Springs and the surrounding areas have experienced rapid growth (the population has doubled in the last five years). This land is the contributing and recharge zone for the Edwards Aquifer, which is the most vulnerable to pollution by urban development in the state of Texas. The Edwards Aquifer is a vast karst aquifer and is characterized by the presence of sinkholes, large springs, caves and highly productive water wells. Due to the porous nature of the aquifer, it has the ability to recharge quickly during rainfall events. A downfall of the porous nature of the Edwards is that there is very little natural filtration to mitigate pollution.

The Trinity Aquifer formations, which surface to the west of the Edwards and support it through contributing spring flow, are heavily impacted by groundwater dependance of both existing communities and new growth.

We advocate to protect the surface and groundwater of the Hill Country for generations to come by encouraging sustainable development throughout Hays County. Through community outreach and education, we hope to empower the citizens of Dripping Springs and beyond to help ensure the enjoyment of the Hill Country for future Texans.

Sustainable Dripping Springs is Dripping Springs' only long-term, all encompassing environmental nonprofit.
